Constitution Day at AMU
Aligarh : Various departments, hostels and schools of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) continue to observe the ‘Constitution Day’.
At the Centre of Continuing and Adult Education and Extension (CCAEE), a lecture was organized on the topic, ‘India, the Mother of Democracy’.
Addressing the occasion, Prof Mohammad Gulrez (Pro-Vice Chancellor and the Director, CCAEE) urged the audience to read the Constitution of India and become familiar with its ideals. It is now very easy to quickly refer to the constitution in need as everyone has a smartphone with all such resources available online, he added.
Delivering the lecture, Prof Mirza Asmer Beg (Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences) held that democracy functions only when citizens are well-informed and there is a balance in observing the rights and duties.
Professor Aysha Munira Rasheed welcomed the guest speaker while Dr Shamim Akhtar proposed a vote of thanks.
Meanwhile, at the Faculty of Law, Aqsa Mehak won the first prize in a debate competition held by the Debate and Discussion Cell, Law Society, Department of Law, Aligarh Muslim University, while Mohd. Areeb Ibrahim and Aayan Rahman got the second and third prizes, respectively.
The debate on the topic, “This House believes that the Constitution of India does not follow the idea of Constitutionalism”, was held for BALLB students at the Moot Court Hall to mark Constitution Day.
Faculty members, Mr. Mohd. Imran (Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology) and Dr. Naghma Azhar (Department of Commerce) judged the competition.
Addressing the students, Dean, Faculty of Law and President, Law Society, Prof. Mohammad Ashraf urged them to participate in such activities with enthusiasm as such events would help them develop debating skills to become good lawyers.
Mahelaka Abrar (Incharge, Debate and Discussion Cell) gave a brief overview of Constitution Day and introduced the judges.
The occasion was observed at the girls residential hostel, Begum Azeezun Nisa Hall with Dr Ghazala Yasmin (Acting Provost) reading the Preamble to the Constitution to students and staff.
“Students also participated in a speech contest on ‘Importance of the Constitution in the life of a Responsible Citizen’ judged by Dr Mohammad Nayyar Khan (Department of Commerce) and Dr Mohammad Nazim (Department of Library Science) followed by a Nukkad Natak (Street Play) on ‘Rights of women in Indian Constitution’ performed by hostel residents”, said Dr Ghazala.
Nada Qadri conducted the programme and Tehmeesh Khan extended the vote of thanks.
