Curtin University Introduces Accelerated Pathway to Address Teacher Shortage in Western Australia
Curtin University is taking a leading role in addressing Western Australia’s teaching shortage by offering a new, one-year Graduate Diploma in Education to get aspiring educators into classrooms faster.
Enrolments are now open, with classes at the Curtin Bentley campus starting in January 2024.
Announcing the new course today, Head of Curtin School of Education Professor Jeff Brooks said the new qualification was created in response to the immense current demand for teachers in WA.
“There is a critical need for more primary and secondary teachers in WA,” Professor Brooks said.
“This accelerated, intensive graduate diploma course will provide a fast-track pathway to get qualified teachers into classrooms where they’re needed most.
“It’s a great example of Curtin’s strong industry ties and flexibility: we’ve heard our schools’ call for more teachers as soon as possible and are providing an agile response to help them address the challenges they’re facing.”
The Graduate Diploma in Education is an intensive program designed for university graduates to study full-time and complete in one year.
Students will choose a primary or secondary teaching pathway and spend 45 days learning in the workplace, split over three placements.
Successful completion of the course will see them meet the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia’s requirements to become a registered teacher in WA.
“The introduction of the Graduate Diploma in Education will further enrich Curtin School of Education’s comprehensive offerings, which already include Bachelor of Education– Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary and a post graduate Master of Teaching,” Professor Brooks said.
Applications for the Graduate Diploma in Education are invited from graduates who have completed a three-year undergraduate degree in a relevant area.
