Dalhousie University: Dalhousie ranks in top quarter of universities in 2023 QS World University Rankings

Dalhousie maintains its place among the top 22 per cent in the 2023 QS World University Rankings, which this year included 1,422 institutions from around the world.

Now ranked at 308 globally, Dalhousie holds on to the 12th place ranking among Canadian universities and is the top-ranked university in Atlantic Canada.

This year’s annual ranking is the largest ever published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and included 124 more universities than last year.

International strength

Dalhousie performed best on indicators with an international focus. The university received the maximum 100 points for proportion of international faculty, which is intended to capture how internationally attractive the university is to academic staff. International student ratio was also a strong contributor — Dalhousie’s score for this indicator tripled the global median.

The university’s results for citations per faculty was also three times that of the global median. Citation scores are calculated using Scopus numbers extracted in February 2022 for the period 2016-2021. Dalhousie was credited with 177,674 net citations (excluding self-citations) for this period.

The QS World University Rankings have used a consistent methodology since 2015 that includes six metrics: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations per faculty (20%), student-faculty ratios (20%), proportion of international students (5%) and proportion of international faculty (5%).
