DC Udhampur for complete elimination of Single Use Plastic

UDHAMPUR : Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, Krittika Jyotsna today chaired a meeting of the District Environment Committee to review progress on elimination of Single Use Plastic (SUP).

At the outset, threadbare discussions were held on the action plan of Plastic Waste Management and present status with regard to implementation of the Action Plan to eliminate the plastic waste.

Reviewing the progress, the DC directed the Chief Education Officer to launch a massive awareness campaign in all educational institutions with active participation of students to discourage the use of single-use plastic in their areas.

The departments were asked to stop the use & selling of single use plastic and use it’s alternate in offices as well as in homes.

An Officer from PCC Udhampur informed that to curb the menace of polythene, anti polythene squads have been constituted for different locations in Udhampur which are conducting regular market inspection. It was informed that 265kg of banned polythene was seized during anti anti-polythene drive by the authority. He said that the department has launched an awareness campaign wherein people were made aware to use cloth or jute bags as an alternative to plastic.

The Manager DIC was asked to promote use of jute or cloth bags by encouraging locals to establish industry and draft a plan to promote this sector.

The Chief Medical Officer apprised the meeting that biomedical waste generated in the hospital is disposed of scientifically as per the norms.

The DC instructed the concerned Officers to ensure effective enforcement of ban on the Single use Plastic. She said that special enforcement teams will be constituted for checking, illegal stocking, distribution, sale and use of banned plastic and its items.
