Decline in FM Radio Accessibility on Modern Smartphones Raises Concerns
In recent years, the unavailability of FM radio tuners in modern smartphones has hindered the ability of users to access local radio stations such as All India Radio, commercial FM channels, and community radio broadcasts. Despite the demand for these services, many mobile manufacturers have opted not to include FM radio functionality, even in high-end models. This trend is largely driven by hardware design changes, like the removal of headphone jacks, and a shift towards internet-based streaming services. This lack of FM radio capability means that users miss out on important local broadcasts, emergency information, and cultural programming that are readily available on terrestrial FM radio. Critics argue that this move marginalizes segments of the population who rely on traditional radio for information and entertainment, especially in areas with limited internet access. Popular media educator, author, broadcaster, and former national president of the Community Radio Association of India, Mr. N A Shah Ansari, says, “Including the FM radio listening option should not be looked at from an increasing cost kind of thing. It’s now a passion of the public. Due to the non-availability of such options, mobile brands are also losing their business. The radio option must be added in each mobile set. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) should also focus on it.” As the debate continues, consumers and advocacy groups are urging smartphone manufacturers to reconsider the inclusion of FM radio functionality in future models to ensure broad accessibility to essential local content.
