Deeksharambh, student’s induction programme held at the Dept of English
ALIGARH : The Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University organized the “Deeksharambh”, Student Induction-cum-Bonding Programme (SIP) 2023-24, for the newly admitted students of M.A. (English), M.A. (English Language Teaching) and BA (English/Communicative English).
Welcoming the new entrants, Prof. Samina Khan, Coordinator, Student Induction Programme, emphasized the idea of “gender championship”, adding that the female students should not feel insecure in the new environment.
She urged them to feel comfortable and assured them of their safety and security on the campus. She said there are several bodies in the university to secure their safety, including the Internal Complaints Committee, Anti-Ragging Committee, the Grievance Redressal Committee and the Proctor’s Office, and that the university believes in prohibitive action, rather than punitive one.
Prof. Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, Chairman of the Department, mentioned the vision and mission of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in the establishment of this prestigious institution. He emphasized the importance of academic sincerity and integrity, and also stressed the importance of active participation in the community activities, within and outside the campus, in the personality growth of students.
He urged them to take part in sports activities for a complete personal development, including the mental and physical well-being of students. He also emphasized the significance of classroom teaching and urged students to attend classes regularly.
Prof. Seemin Hasan congratulated the students for having opted into the course and underlined the significance of humanities as a discipline and how it plays a key role in the lives of the people. She highlighted the history of the Department of English, and the role the Raleigh Literary Society plays for the literary grooming of the students. She urged them to “speak out and discuss problems with teachers, listen to them contently, read a lot, assimilate knowledge and never let failure overpower them as it is the best feedback”.
Prof. Shagufta Imtiaz highlighted the importance of English Teaching Language as a discipline and the diversity of its application. She exhorted the students to be in touch with other departments for comprehensive understanding of ELT with a multidisciplinary approach.
Prof Raashid Nehal, Prof Sami Rafiq and Prof Jawed S Ahmed also addressed the gathering, emphasizing and motivating the students to learn, grow and be an educated citizen.
A PowerPoint presentation prepared by research scholars was made to introduce the faculty members and the areas of their specialization.
Dr. Md. Saquib Abrar, Convener, extended a vote of thanks.
