Department of Geology Organises Week-long Earth Day Events

 

Aligarh : The Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organized a week-long Earth Day events, wherein several activities including slogan writing and poster making competitions, special lectures and plantation drive were held.

AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammad Gulrez presided over the concluding ceremony of the week-long celebrations. In his remarks he highlighted the problem of climate change and its associated impact.

Prof Gulrez appreciated the initiative of the Department and its research and placement activities.

Chief Guest Dr. Kalachand Sain, Director, Wadia Institute, and Prof. Kr. Farahim Khan, Chairperson of the Department addressed the audience and stressed upon the importance of Geosciences in saving our planet.

Dignitaries including the Vice Chancellor, Chief Guest, Chairperson, Convener and Organizing Secretary distributed prizes and certificates among the winners of the slogan and poster competitions.

The concluding ceremony was followed by a special technical lecture by Dr. Kalachand Sain on ‘Geohazards in the Himalaya and Plausible Mitigation’. Dr. Sain discussed the lessons to be learnt from recent catastrophic events like Kedarnath and Chamoli disasters in the Himalayan region. He also shared his recent research on these disastrous events and the way forward to combat the natural disasters in the Himalayas.

Organizing Secretary Prof. M.E.A. Mondal conducted the programme, while Prof. Rashid Umar, convener of the events, proposed a vote of thanks.

Following the theme of India’s G-20 Presidency –‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, the Department of Geology also organized a plantation drive within the premises of the Department. On the occasion the staff and students were sensitized about the need of tree plantation and how trees are critical to the survival of life on earth.
