ALIGARH : The Department of Industrial Chemistry, Aligarh Muslim University organized extension lectures under its lecture series, inviting eminent scientist, Datu Prof. Ir. Mohd. Omar, a retired professor of University Sains Malaysia and Director, PICORP, who spoke on “Environmental effects of mining industry and its mitigations” and “Designs of groundwater treatment for drinking in remote areas”.

In his first lecture, Prof Omar highlighted the effects of the mining industry on environment and it’s mitigation and urged for careful mining of natural resources involving all stake holders to prevent pollution of soil, ground water, flora fauna and other habitat and maintain sustainability and diversity, including the social fabric of the region. He also presented the case study of some Manganese mining sites in Malaysia.

Discussing the drinking water treatment system in remote locations in his second lecture, Prof Omar presented the design of few large treatment plants for local population in hilly areas of Malaysia. The sampling of drinking water and studying physicochemical parameters to identify the common pollutants helped in devising a viable strategy for treatment, he added.

He urged the university teachers of science and engineering disciplines to join hands and extend their scientific skills for community services to solve national problems like making drinking water available to remote areas.

Earlier, Prof. Anees Ahmad, Chairperson, Department of Industrial Chemistry welcomed the speaker, while Dr. Shahab AA Nami extended a vote of thanks. Dr. Mohammad Zain Khan, conducted the lectures.
