Department of Social Work Organizes Mental Health Training Program
Aligar : The Department of Social Work, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), recently organized an interactive mental health training program, focusing on mindfulness techniques and practical approaches to mental well-being.
Chaired by the Chairman of the Department, Prof. Naseem A Khan and convened by Dr. Mohammad Tahir, the session welcomed Dr. Mustafa Naseem Kirmani, a NIMHANS-trained Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor at Amity University, Haryana, as the resource person.
In his address, Prof. Khan highlighted the importance of mental health and introduced the concept of “training the brain” to handle stress effectively. He emphasized that understanding mental health is crucial for Social Work students who often encounter high-stress situations in their profession. His focus was on promoting mindfulness and resilience in students to help them cope with everyday challenges.
Dr. Kirmani encouraged student engagement, asking each participant reflective questions about their strengths, self-perception, and experiences that shaped their personal attributes. He also conducted a mindfulness activity comprising four steps: focused breathing, body sensation awareness, sound recognition, and thought observation. This exercise was designed to help participants achieve greater clarity and mental composure.
