Dept. of Political Science hosted a talk

 

Aligarh : The Department of Political Science at Aligarh Muslim University hosted a talk recently that was chaired by Professor Iqbalur Rehman. The event featured renowned Guest speaker Professor Dewi Meyrasyawati from Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia. She unveiled her forthcoming book, “Hijab Practices of Muslim Women in Their Everyday Lives,” a culmination of extensive ethnographic research exploring Hijab-wearing women’s experiences, particularly in Indonesia and Surabaya. She emphasized the harmonious coexistence of piety and fashion in their lives, challenging stereotypes.

Dr. Sana Aziz, Assistant Professor, Department of History, delved into the political dimensions of the Hijab controversy, highlighting the influence of Islamophobia on the marginalization of Muslim women, restricting their freedom of self-expression.

Dr. Tarushikha Sarvesh, Assistant Professor, representing the Advanced Center for Women’s Studies, explored theoretical perspectives on choice, agency, and domination, urging attendees to critically analyze the discourse shaping their lives.

The event culminated in an engaging discussion and a Q&A session, which were moderated by Mr. Parvez Alam, allowing students, faculty, and attendees to delve deeper into these pressing issues. Prof. Mohibul Haq concluded with gratitude towards the speakers and the enthusiastic audience of over 300 students.
