DLSA Udhampur organises Webinar on Rights of Prisoners & ‘Plea Bargaining’
UDHAMPUR: On the direction of J&K Legal Services Authority, District Legal Services Authority, Udhampur today organized a legal awareness webinar on the topic “Prisoners & Plea Bargaining” under the guidance of Y.P Bourney, Principal District & Session judge and Chairman DLSA, and under the overall supervision of Secretary DLSA (sub judge) Rajni Sharma in collaboration with District Jail Udhampur.
Dr. S.D Jamwal, ADGP Security and Indu Kanwal Chib, Deputy Commissioner Udhampur were guest of honor, while Sulman Choudhary DIG Udhampur Reasi range, Sargun Shukla, Senior Superintendent of Police Udhampur and Chairman Tehsil Legal Services Committee Ramnagar, Chenani and Majalta were special guest in the webinar.
Secretary DLSA, Udhampur, Rajani Sharma, delivered the introductory address. She said that the online program was organized as per the mandate of the Calendar of the programs of Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority for the month of June under the project “Access to Justice for J&K” (Phase-II). She said the objective of conducting this online program was to encourage the lawyers to file applications in eligible cases which will lead to reduction in heavy backlog of cases as well as facilitate early disposal of the cases of the accused and ensure adequate compensation to the victims.
Advocate D.S Chouhan and Advocate Vikas Magotra of High Court were the resource persons. They threw light on the importance of the topic and shared their valuable knowledge on the subject with the participants of this program.
The Chairman DLSA and resource persons discussed all the provisions pertaining to Plea Bargaining lucidly along with its practical aspects. They explained all the provisions pertaining to Plea Bargaining along with its practical aspects and also highlighted various Constitutional and other statutory provisions related to the Rights of Prisoners. Queries of jail inmates were also answered on the occasion.
ADGP Security Dr S.D Singh spoke on plea bargaining and appreciated secretary DLSA Udhampur for Making tireless effort in organising webinar on a number of social issues and making the people aware about their legal rights by organising such webinars during Covid pandemic.
The Panel lawyer, Pawan Gupta explained basic rights of prisoners like protection from torture and violence, terms and conditions for parole etc.
Advocate J.D Slathia President Bar association Udhampur presented vote of thanks in the end. Besides others, all the jail inmates, along with Superintendent and staff members of Sub Jail Udhampur, Police officers, Bar members, Panel advocates DLSA staff and PLVs attended the online program.
