Doctors perform EVLA procedures at JNMC workshop

Aligarh : Five patients suffering swollen, heavy and painful legs resorted to temporary solutions like ointments and other home remedies until they reached the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), where consultations revealed that enlarged tortuous greenish veins on legs are posing a risk to their lifestyle and that they immediately require the minimally invasive Endovascular Laser Ablation (EVLA) procedures to close the varicose veins, restore proper blood circulation and cause the twisted, bulging veins to disappear over the course of a few weeks.

The patients finally underwent successful EVLA procedures in a vascular workshop moderated by Dr Suhail Naseem Bukhari (Director, Vascular Surgery, BLK-MAX hospital, New Delhi) at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, JNMC. They were discharged soon after recovery.

“EVLA uses heat from a laser to reduce the varicose veins which flow the blood backwards if not treated in time. In these cases, blood can stay in the veins, causing them to expand, stretch, and become twisted”, said Dr Suhail Bukhari who performed the surgeries with Prof Mohd Azam Haseen (Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery), Dr Shamayal Rabbani, Dr Md Ghazanfar, Dr Saif Aleem and Dr Nadeem Raza (Anesthesiologist).

He was delivering a talk on ‘New Techniques in Vascular Surgery’ after performing the EVLA surgeries in the workshop.

“Minimally invasive techniques have been at the forefront of surgical progress, and the evolution of endovascular technologies has seen a paradigm shift in the focus of future innovation. The new techniques will help overcome many of the challenges associated with traditional endovascular techniques by enabling greater control, stability, and precision of target navigation and treatment, while simultaneously reducing operator learning curves and improving safety”, added Dr Suhail Bukhari.

He also spoke about his over two decades of experience as a vascular and endo vascular surgeon at the Sir Ganga Ram, Fortis Escorts and Max Group of hospitals.

“Varicose veins can lead to recurrent non-healing wounds and cause bleeding from the veins that can break off due to trauma or spontaneously. People do not seek treatment as they are afraid of surgery. While the conventional therapies could be painful and require a relatively long recovery time, the minimally invasive EVLA procedure provides quick healing and recovery”, said AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor.

He added: “JNMC doctors and surgeons have been performing safe and highly effective procedures affordable to all sections of society, whereas most speciality centres charge exorbitant fees and have endless waiting rows of patients.

Prof M U Rabbani (Dean, Faculty of Medicine) spoke about how early diagnosis and intervention can help prevent varicose veins from becoming worse.

Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Principal, JNMC) remarked, “It is a proud moment. The success of the surgeries at this workshop shows how complicated surgical procedures are carried out with ease and very little money at JNMC”.

“The EVLA surgery is conducted without any major cuts in the body and is cosmetically better and acceptable treatment”, said Prof Mohd Azam Haseen.

He added that only a select few centres in Uttar Pradesh have specialists to perform EVLA procedures.

Dr Shamayal Rabbani and Dr Md Ghazanfar, Assistant Professors at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery pointed out that the EVLA procedures only take about an hour, and most patients resume normal activities immediately.
