Doon’s Young Powerlifting Prodigy, Prithvi Samrat Sengupta, Wins Bronze at IPF World Championship

Dehradun: Dehradun’s very own powerlifting star, Prithvi Samrat Sengupta, has made history by winning the Bronze medal at the IPF World Open Powerlifting Championship 2024, held recently in Iceland. This announcement was made by his mother, Niyateey Shah, and his coach, Aman Rai Vohra, at a press conference held today at the Doon Library and Research Center.

The 18-year-old Prithvi competed in the highly challenging 66kg weight category. He secured a Silver in Squat, a Bronze in Deadlift, and an overall Bronze in his category, earning his place among the best in the world.

Addressing the media, Prithvi’s mother, Niyateey Shah, said, “Prithvi’s journey to the podium is nothing short of extraordinary. Born with Down syndrome, he has shattered societal expectations and redefined excellence in sports. His story is one of resilience, grit, and determination. At the open tournament in Iceland, he faced off against athletes twice his age, becoming the youngest participant in his category and earning the title ‘Mountain Beast’ for his unmatched strength and spirit.”

Expressing immense pride, she added, “Today, I can proudly say my son is born to lift, and the world now recognizes his strength. This victory reflects not just his hard work but also the unwavering support and faith of everyone who believed in him.”

Prithvi’s coach, Aman Rai Vohra, India’s Strongest Man 2018 and International Strongman Athlete, lauded his achievements, saying,  “This is not just a medal; it is a moment of transformation for the sports community in Uttarakhand. Prithvi is only the second person from the state to win a medal at the open world powerlifting championship, the last being 15 years ago. His professional journey with me started 18 months ago when he shifted from Mumbai to Dehradun. Since then, his dedication, focus, and ability to overcome challenges has inspired not only athletes but also everyone who dreams big. Prithvi has emerged as a star in Uttarakhand’s sports fraternity, and this is just the beginning of his global journey.”

Prithvi’s achievements speak volumes about his dedication to the sport. He is a two-time National Powerlifting Champion, has bagged gold medals at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship in South Africa, and has brought laurels to India by winning at the Asian Powerlifting Championships in Kyrgyzstan and Malaysia. Under the guidance of celebrated coaches like Aman Rai Vohra, Prithvi has consistently proven himself on the international stage.

Born in 2006 in Mumbai, Prithvi moved his base permanently to Dehradun at the age of 16. Beyond his accolades in powerlifting, Prithvi is a multi-talented individual with passions for baking. A proud resident of Dehradun, he continues to inspire not just his hometown but the entire nation with his unyielding spirit.
