Dr. Ranjit Rath given the additional charge of Director General, GSI
Kolkata: Dr. Ranjit Rath, a recipient of the prestigious “National Geosciences Award 2016” from Hon’ble President of India and the Chairman cum Managing Director of Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL), a Mini Ratna -I CPSE under Ministry of Mines, has been entrusted with the additional charge of Director General of Geological Survey of India from 1st May 2020. Dr. Rath succeeds Shri M. Sridhar who retired on 30th April 2020.
A practitioner Geoscientist, Dr. Ranjit Rath, is an alumnus of IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and IIFT, New Delhi. He has a portfolio of multifarious roles spanning from strategy formulation, business development, upstream oil & gas assets management and application of geosciences & exploration geology in several important projects including creation of Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPRs) a first of its kind initiative of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. of India entailing underground unlined rock caverns for strategic storage of crude oil – An intervention towards energy security. He has co-authored an important book on “Underground Storage Technologies” and has published several technical papers and participated in conference in India and overseas.
Under his leadership MECL for the year FY 2019-20 has achieved all time highest physical and financial performance since last 48 years – Turnover, PBT, PAT, Order book & Productivity through seamless project execution. He has implemented several HR welfare policies including training & skill development for a future ready organization with respect to the prepared “Vision 2030-Strategy & Action Plan” for enhanced and expedited exploration coverage through active engagement with Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Coal, GSI, IBM, CMPDIL & several CPSEs, State Govts. and State PSUs etc.
With above 24 years of impeccable experience & expertise in the field of Geosciences as well as his corporate exposure would enable him to discharge his responsibilities as Director General, GSI. It is expected that GSI will continue to rise further and attain newer heights and would facilitate seamless convergence between central and state governments, industry and academia for the geology and mining sectors in the country.
