Durham University: Durham and Steinway – Setting the standard for musical excellence

Becoming the UK’s only Steinway University
We will become an all-Steinway university in April with an investment in 58 pianos – the largest investment of any University in the UK. The concert pianist’s instrument of choice will be available for all students of all levels of musical talent. They will be accessible throughout the University – both within the Music Department and across the University’s 17 Colleges, cementing Durham’s commitment to music, as the UK’s top ranked university in the subject.

The Steinway experience
Liberal Arts student Mary-Anne Grego commented that it was an “amazing” experience. Whilst Law student Risako Takamura became “immersed in the wonderful sound”.

The pair heard about the masterclass and auditioned to attend the event. They were delighted at having the exceptional opportunity to play in the wonderful setting of the Steinway Hall and under the guidance of Steinway artist, Charles Owen.

The Sir Thomas Allen legacy
