‘Eco Awareness Week’ at AMU
Aligarh: Consciousness on the fragility of environment and the importance of its protection was raised through series of lectures and other activities in the ‘Eco Awareness Week’ observations of the Cultural Education Centre (CEC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
The week-long programme began with the ‘World Sparrow Day’ lecture by Dr Nazneen Zehra (Department of Wildlife Sciences) in which she explained the importance of house sparrows and other common birds to urban environments.
She warned: The disappearance of these small birds is harmful to ecosystems of geographic areas where plants, animals, and other organisms work together to form a bubble of life.
Her lecture was followed by screening of Robot 2.0, a feature film on the issue of bird plight caused by phone tower radiation.
In the ‘International Day of Forests’ talk, Dr Orus Ilyas (Department of Wildlife Sciences) discussed how forest-based innovations, resource efficiency, forest-based products and ecosystem services can contribute to a sustainable lifestyle and accelerate a shift towards more sustainable consumption and production.
Delivering the ‘World Water Day’ address, Prof Izharul Haque Farooqui (Department of Civil Engineering) highlighted the importance of fresh water and called for sustainable management of freshwater resources.
Prof Mohammad Rehan (Department of Electrical Engineering) discoursed on ‘metrology in the digital era’ in the ‘World Meteorological Day’ speech.
The week-long observations concluded with ‘Eco Awareness Campus Wide Walk’, flagged by Prof Mohammad Shameem (Department of TB and Respiratory Diseases) and speeches to mark the World TB day.
“The Chief Guest, Prof Mohammad Shameem with Prof Mohammad Aftab (Chairman, Department of ENT), Dr Zia Siddiqui (Department of Ophthalmology) and Dr Ali Jafar Abedi (President, University Eco Club) pressed for the need to create awareness about TB and to update clinicians on TB management. Kulsum Salahuddin (Secretary, University Eco Club) was the programme convener”, said Prof F S Sherani (Coordinator, CEC).
