ETU “LETI”: LETI Has Strengthened Its Standings in Emerging Economies University Rankings
The British magazine Times Higher Education has published the results of the Emerging Economies University Rankings 2021.
The rankings use 13 indicators grouped into five categories: Teaching, Research, Citations, International Outlook, and Industry Income. In contrast to THE World University Rankings, the indicators have different weightings to reflect the development priorities in countries.
St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI” retained its place in the 301-350 band and was ranked 21st among Russian universities.
ETU “LETI” showed the greatest increase in Industry Income indicators, compared to last year – from 54.7 to 60.7 points. It allowed the university to come close to the top 100 universities included in the rankings and take 15th place among Russian universities by this criterion.
Intensive cooperation with leading enterprises in high-tech industries is one of LETI’s priorities. Today, the university is a member of the Translational Medicine research and education cluster, consortiums to establish world-class research and educational centers in 5G and advanced networks and in Artificial Intelligence in Industry, as well as the Shipbuilding and Marine Technology consortium.
In 2020-2021, ETU “LETI” entered the consortiums Telecommunication Technologies, Microwave Technologies of New Generation Digital and Analog Systems, REC Future Engineering, and received state support for the development of research center Personalized Medicine, High-Tech Medical Care, and Healthcare Technologies. Eight universities, institutes, and companies established the research and production consortium “Intelligent Agricultural Systems and Carbon Engineering,” initiated by LETI.
ETU “LETI” also showed growth in Teaching (from 19.8 to 20.2 points), Research (from 13 to 13.8 points), and International Outlook (from 32.4 to 35.3 points).

According to the experts of the ETU “LETI” Analytical Center, to further advance in the rankings, it is necessary to develop international collaborations in research, attracting international teachers and scientists, increasing citations of publications and academic reputation.
“Recognition and reputation in the world of science are directly related to breakthrough discoveries on the frontier research agenda. In this regard, today, we have concentrated our efforts on the university’s priority areas. We expect to achieve a lead in them, which will later convert into the reputation and brand recognition of our university,” Viktor Sheludko, Rector of ETU “LETI,” emphasized.
A total of 606 universities from 48 countries were listed in THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2021. The top three universities are from China: Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Zhejiang University.
Among 48 Russian universities included in the rankings, Lomonosov Moscow State University showed the best result. St. Petersburg is represented by five leading universities: in addition to ETU “LETI,” it includes St. Petersburg State University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, ITMO University, and St. Petersburg Mining University.
