Expansion Alert: UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Broadens Inpatient Pediatrics at UPMC Hamot Facility
UPMC Hamot today announced the naming of their nine-bed pediatric unit to UPMC Children’s at UPMC Hamot, forming a closer alignment with the specialists and leadership of Pittsburgh-based UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and expanding inpatient pediatric services.
UPMC Children’s Hospital will partner closely with UPMC Hamot to enhance the delivery of world-class pediatric care in the Erie region, ensuring that specialized care remains easily accessible for patients and families close to home.
In addition to the nine-bed pediatric inpatient unit, UPMC Hamot also provides continuum of care from newborn to adolescent age at UPMC Magee-Womens in Erie, ranging from a 16-bed newborn nursery to a 24-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
UPMC Children’s has a large presence in Erie, and this will add to the strong complement of pediatric services available, including outpatient care offered through UPMC Children’s Express Care-Erie, UPMC Children’s Specialty Care Center Erie, pediatric emergency care services and UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics offices throughout the region.
“Delivering quality care close to home in all of the communities we serve is a big part of UPMC Children’s overall mission,” said Diane Hupp, president of UPMC Children’s. “This is just another step to help us grow and continue to provide world class exceptional pediatric care throughout our region and beyond.”
“In just the past 12 months, there were 6,800 visits that occurred in UPMC Children’s outpatient locations in the Pittsburgh area from patients that reside in Erie County,” added Hupp. “We see the increase in the demand for pediatric care in this region, both inpatient and outpatient, and we are committed to meeting that need and demand for these families.”
“Today, we add to our growing list of what differentiates us from other health care organizations in the region,” said Brian Durniok, interim president of UPMC Hamot. “Our dedicated staff now have more advanced support from their expert colleagues in Pittsburgh and unmatched pediatric care for children with acute illnesses and injuries throughout the Erie region.”
“Our pediatric patients will now have a smooth transition of care from the inpatient to outpatient setting,” said Dale King, M.D., medical director of pediatric services in Northwest Pa. and Western New York. “Families will be able to follow up after their inpatient admission with over 10 pediatric subspecialties conveniently located at UPMC Children’s Specialty Care Center Erie at the main hospital. We want to make this transition as easy as possible for families.”
