Extension Lecture on Oral Oncology and Tobacco related Health Risks

 

Aligarh : The Department of Periodontia and Community Dentistry, Dr Z.A. Dental College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organized an educational lecture on the topic of “Turning the wheels in Oral Oncology”, in commemoration of the ‘World No Tobacco Day’.

Guest speaker, renowned Onco-surgeon and researcher Dr Anshuman Kumar, Director, Dharamshila Cancer hospital, New Delhi shed light on the critical issues surrounding oral oncology and tobacco-related health risks.

Dr Anshuman and his team members including Dr Kalyani Singh, Dr Debasmita Sarkar and Dr Akansha Singh, who specialize in the field of head and neck cancers, delineated the health hazards of tobacco use.

Prof R K Tewari, Principal, ZADC said that the World No Tobacco Day is observed globally on May 31st each year, which serves as a reminder of the alarming health risks associated with tobacco consumption. “Tobacco use is not only linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases but is also a significant risk factor for oral cancers, which continue to pose a growing public health concern”, he added.

The extension lecture brought together leading experts in the field to share their knowledge and insights with the audience. The event provided a platform for healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and members of the public to engage in an informed dialogue about various aspects of oral oncology.

During the lecture, key topics including oral cancers: types, prevalence, and risk factors, the link between tobacco use and oral health, early detection and prevention strategies, latest advancements in oral oncology research and treatment and the role of community engagement in promoting tobacco-free environments were discussed.

The Organising Secretary Prof Neha Agrawal said that “the lecture was part of our ongoing commitment to promoting public health and raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco”.
