Extra-mural lecture held on Gender Justice

ALIGARH  : The Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University organized an extra-mural lecture on “Gender Justice and Family Law vis-a-vis Constitutional Morality” by Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India, Mr Colin Gonsalves.

In his lecture, Mr Gonsalves discussed the evolution of gender justice over the centuries and noted that rights are won through struggle instead of being granted easily. He also highlighted the distinction between societal and constitutional morality, affirming that individual autonomy is governed by the latter.

He urged the AMU students to confront societal injustices and misuse of laws and constitution, and called upon them to become iconoclastic agents of change, emphasizing the potential of young people to reshape the world.

Prof. Hashmat Ali, Incharge, Law Society, discussed the recent trends in Indianisation of Indian criminal justice system.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. M.Z.M. Nomani, Dean, Faculty of Law applauded Mr. Colin Gonsalves’ seminal contribution to valiant victims and highlighted his role in Indian bar as “People’s Lawyer” promoting Public Interest Litigation as a gateway to justice.

A question-and-answer session followed the lecture.

A prize distribution ceremony was also held to felicitate Jitendra Bharadwaj, Sadiya, Madiha Naaz and Arisha Malik, the winners of the essay writing competition held on “Addressing Gender Bias in Laws: A Critical View of India’s Legal Framework”.

Mr. Aman Alam and Mr. Zain Haider, Advocates, Supreme Court of India accompanied Mr. Colin Gonsalves through a heritage walk to Sir Syed House and Strachey Hall.
