Foreign faculty delivers lecture on Odontogenic infections
ALIGARH : Prof. Zsolt Nemeth (Head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary) delivered a lecture on “Odontogenic infection”, was organized by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr ZA Dental College, Aligarh Muslim University.
Speaking on the complexities of the Odontogenic infections, Prof Zsolt, who is a part of the team of surgeons from Semmelweis University, currently visiting the Aligarh Muslim University under the Erasmus Plus educational exchange programme, stated that these infections are most commonly caused by dental caries. “Localized infections may be treated simply, while severe odontogenic infections that have spread into the spaces of the head and neck require hospital admission and operating room treatment” he added.
“The majority of severe odontogenic infections are treated routinely, however, several complications including the patient risk factors, diagnostic tools, and clinical features of the complications associated with severe odontogenic infections may arise. The complications associated with severe odontogenic infections are worthy of review, including airway obstruction, descending necrotizing mediastinitis, orbital abscess, septic cavernous sinus thrombosis, cerebral abscess, sepsis, necrotizing fasciitis, and Lemierre’s syndrome”, he said.
Dr. Veena Maheshwari (Dean, Faculty of Medicine) presided over the programme. Prof. R. K. Tewari (Principal, Dr. ZA Dental College) also attended the lcture.
Prof. GS Hashmi (Chairman, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) introduced the guests and initiated the discussion.
