Foreign faculty visit the Department of Physics
ALIGARH : A delegation of HSF-India, the National Science Foundation (USA) funded project in the USA, visited the Department of Physics, Aligarh Muslim University.
The delegation discussed the issues of common interests in order to make contributions with a global impact on software development in high-energy physics and related fields. They also interacted with the faculty members, research scholars, and postgraduate students regarding the opportunities in the above fields.
The visiting team members included Prof. Rafael Coelho Lopes de Sa and Prof. Verena Martinez Outschoorn (University of Massachusetts, Amherst), and Prof. Peter Elmer (Princeton University). Other members of the HSF-India are Prof. David Lange (Princeton University) and Prof. Heidi Schellman (Oregon State University).
Prof. Outschoorn discussed the objectives of the visit. He said HSF-India aims at connecting collaborative networks in India, the USA, and Europe, in order to build the international research software collaborations required to achieve the goals of next-generation particle, nuclear, and astroparticle physics experiments including the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment at Fermilab, and the Electron-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Prof. Coelho presented a broader perspective of their vision to the students and research scholars during the physics department colloquium organized by the Science Club.
Prof. Mohammad Sajjad Athar (Chairperson, Department of Physics) introduced the visiting guests to the faculty members and researchers who are interested in joining the collaboration.
Dr Noor Alam presented his work and experiences related to A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE), Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning in heavy-ion collisions. Dr Shamsul Islam summarized his work on ALICE data analysis, Robust Independent Validation of Experiment and Theory (RIVET) analysis, and expressed keen interest in joining the collaboration. Ms Shaista Khan discussed her ongoing research related to ALICE data analysis and her experience in hardware development at CERN. Dr Anuj Chandra presented his PhD thesis related to the GRAPES-3 experiment and his current work in Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) and ALICE experiments.
