Freie Universitaet Berlin: Congress on the Developments in Eastern Europe
From October 6–7, 2022, experts in East European studies will be gathering at Freie Universität Berlin to discuss the latest research questions in their field. The implications of the Russian war on Ukraine for Eastern European studies will be one of the main topics at this year’s “ceecon” congress, as will the challenges of international research partnerships during times of war. The conference will be officially opened by Ruprecht Polenz, president of the German Association for East European Studies (DGO e.V.) and CDU politician, and Prof. Sven Chojnacki, vice president of Freie Universität Berlin.
The largest multidisciplinary congress on Central and Eastern Europe in the German-speaking world, “ceecon” (Congress of Central and East European Studies) is a joint event organized by the DGO and Freie Universität’s Institute for East European Studies (OEI). Over the two days, researchers will take part in plenary sessions that address a range of academic subjects and methodological approaches. Events have been divided into seven discipline-specific sections: economy, geography, history, law, literature and culture, politics and sociology, and religion.
The congress will also feature a screening of the film Evge (“Homeward”), directed by Nariman Aliev, in Kino Arsenal on Potsdamer Platz on October 7 at 7:30 p.m. The film focuses on two scenes of Russian intervention in 2014: the war in the Donbas and the occupation of Crimea. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Tamila Tasheva (representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea) and Viktoria Leshchenko (program director of DOCUDAYS UA Film Festival, Kyiv).
