In the new Times Higher Education (THE) ranking, Freie Universität Berlin was once again among the one hundred best universities worldwide, coming in at number ninety-one. As announced by THE in London, the university is now among the top eight universities in Germany and ranks thirty-second in Europe. Research and teaching are two of Freie Universität Berlin’s strong suits, coming in at number seventy-two and ninety-one specifically in those areas (respectively).

According to the magazine’s ranking, the eight best German universities are: Technische Universität München (rank thirty), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (rank thirty-three), Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (rank forty-three), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (rank seventy-three), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (rank eighty-six), University of Tübingen (rank eighty-six), University of Bonn (rank eighty-nine), and Freie Universität Berlin (rank ninety-one). Interestingly, THE lists Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin as if it were an independent university, even though it is in fact the joint medical faculty of Freie Universität and Humboldt-Universität.

The Times Higher Education ranking is based in part on a global survey of researchers that takes into account universities’ reputations, their research, teaching, international orientation, citation frequency of publications, and other statistical indicators. In total 1,799 universities took part in the most recent THE ranking. The University of Oxford topped the ranking, with the British university just ahead of other prominent higher education institutions like the California Institute of Technology and Harvard University in the USA.
