Gannon University Hosts Health Explorations Camp

Current Cathedral Prep students enrolled in the MedPath program explored the various health professions and careers offered at Gannon, taking part in interactive, demonstrative and immersive experiences in Gannon’s Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences. Training and certifications were also offered throughout this week-long experience.

Holly Mihaly, faculty in Gannon’s Radiologic Sciences Program and chair of the camp, said one of the many purposes of the camp is educating students on the variety of healthcare careers available to them.

“There are a lot of misconceptions about the people who work in health care,” said Mihaly. “This camp shines a light on all of the other professions that come together in a collaborative effort to take care of people.”

Presentations included applied exercise science, public health, athletic training, radiology, physical therapy, respiratory care, communication sciences and disorders and more. Students even got the opportunity to participate in the Patient Simulation Center, which brings a variety of fields – such as nursing, physician assistant and occupational therapy – together for collaborative learning.

While this year was open to Cathedral Prep students only, going forward, Gannon plans to make the camp available to anyone.

“The students may not know what profession they want to go into,” Mihaly added. “But going through this camp and being exposed to different options, it may spark something in them and ignite their passion into a future career.”
