GDC Kathua organises Poster Making Competition on “Impact of Russia-Ukraine war on Climate Change”
KATHUA : Department of Chemistry Government Degree College Kathua organized a poster making competition on the theme “Impact of Russia-Ukraine war on Climate Change.”
The competition was organized under the overall supervision of Principal of the College Prof. Sumanesh Jasrotia.
In his welcome address, the HOD Chemistry and Convener Poster Making Competition, Prof. Rakesh Singh gave a detail of the activities organized by the Department of Chemistry including National level events such as Webinars, Quiz Competitions and Seminars. He exhorted upon the students to participate in such events as they keep the students updated about the sensitive issues concerning mankind. He further said that the Russia-Ukraine war has shifted the focus of Countries from climate change to energy security as now countries are more concerned towards their energy needs than climate and hence this may have harmful impact on the climate. He also said that explosions from rockets or fires generate huge volumes of debris and waste. The release of hazardous materials such as asbestos, industrial chemicals, poisonous gases compound the effects of environmental contamination.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal of the college Prof. Sumanesh Jasrotia appreciated the Department of Chemistry for organising a poster making competition on the most relevant issue of present time as the Russia-Ukraine war has put the whole world into crisis. He said that Oil and gas facilities in Kharkiv have come under heavy fire since the war began, disrupting Ukraine’s energy supply, and releasing enormous amounts of greenhouse gas emissions and other contaminants into the atmosphere that make it difficult to breathe. He further emphasized that if this war is not stopped immediately, there are chances of World war/ Nuclear war which may cause irreversible damage to the climate and can put the whole mankind into grave risk.
The whole event was organized by an organizing Committee comprising Convener Prof. Rakesh Singh and members Dr. Anupma Arora, Dr. Pankaj Gupta, Dr. Ambica, Dr. Upasana Andotra, Dr. Roshan Lal, Dr. Nisha Chaudhary, Dr. Naryan Dutt and Dr. Sheraz Ahmed Wagey.
In all twenty eight students of Semester 4th and 6th took part in the poster making competition. Students prepared posters displaying the glimpses of Russia-Ukraine War and after effects on environmental degradation. They particularly displayed the rise in Global Temperature, Melting of Glaciers and how the rise in sea level affects the population residing on the sea shores.
Talvi Sharma of Semester 6 was adjudged 1st, 2nd prize was shared by Tarun Priya and Rohni of Semester VIth, while Aditi Sharma of Semester VIth was adjudged 3rd . Nitika Rajput was given a consolation prize.
Prof. Raj Kiran Sharma, Dr. Deepshikha Sharma and Prof. Neha Mahajan were the Judges. Prof. Jasvinder Singh, Convener IQAC was also present on the occasion.
Dr. Anupma Arora along with other organizing committee members supervised the event and Dr. Pankaj Gupta presented the vote of thanks.
