GDC Udhampur organises Symposium on “Why sustainable Development?”

UDHAMPUR: Government Degree College Udhampur, as a component of the continuum programs under celebration of India’s Presidency of G20 nations, Innovation and sustainability, and taking forward the torch of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, a symposium on “Why Sustainable Development ?” was organised in the conference hall of the College here today.

The programme was conducted under the patronage of Principal Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Kumar Gupta and guidance of Dr. Sunil Kumar Gupta, Coordinator G20 activities.

In the Symposium the Students from different streams of the college participated with great zeal and enthusiasm, showcasing their ideas and views regarding conservation of natural resources and their sustainable utilization. Dr. Swarn Singh was the overall coordinator for the Event.

In his presidential message Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta, Principal of the College briefed the students and highlighted the significance of natural resources and their sustainable use and conservation for future generation.

He accentuated on making the best use of the available knowledge and resources for achieving sustainability and also adopt the three Ks (Kab? Kyon? Ore Kaise?) to be problem solving and innovative with new solutions.

In the competition the students viz. Ambika Thakur, Anjali Sambyal, Aashish Singh, Sachin Kumar, Assish Sharma, Amit Sharma, Yashita, Baljeet Singh, Shivansh and Harsh Verma all from Sem-II of the College Presented their views about Why there is need of sustainable development today, in a very justified and expansive manners.

The views of the students were applauded and appreciated by the faculty and the students present. The competition was judged by Prof. Farooq Mirza department of Education and Dr Anita Department of Zoology. Else than the competition Mr. Farooq, a student of Msc Chemistry also presented his views regarding the SDGs and our approach.

The resource person Prof. Asma Javaid, Assistant Professor Department of Botany, shared with the students her views regarding United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Goals, the significance of natural resources, their conservation and their sustainable utilization. She encouraged the students to act as ambassadors of SSD goals and spread awareness among the local communities.

On the Occasion Dr. Pankaj Sharma, Co-convener G20 Activities and Coordinator Innovation Incubation Cell of the college briefed all the presenters and the audience about the SEE (Society, Economy and Environment) model of Sustainable development and need of innovation/s, start ups and innovative entrepreneurship for the sustainable development. He appealed to the faculty and the students to come up with innovative ideas for SSD which will be supported by the IIC of the college and should be hand held by the department of higher education further.

After this the results of the symposium were declared in which Baljeet Singh of Bsc-Sem 2 clinched first position, whereas Yashita and Aashish Singh of Bsc Sem-2 bagged 2nd and third position respectively.

The Program was attended by Dr. Anita Sharma, Prof. Pooja Dheman, Prof. Sanjeev Kumar, Dr. Naseeb Singh and many students of PG Hindi, PG Chemistry and different streams of Ug.

In the end, Dr. Jasmeet Kour, faculty from Department of Biotechnology tendered the formal vote of thanks.
