GDC Uri organises awareness/ plantation drive to celebrate ‘Wildlife Week’

 

BARAMULLA : On the occasion of celebration of Wildlife Week, the Government Degree College Uri under the guidance of Principal of the college, Dr. Sharief Ud Din Khan today organised an awareness cum plantation drive within the college campus.

For this activity, important perennial plants were procured from the Sheri Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology (SKUAST) located at Shalimar (Srinagar, Kashmir).

On the occasion, the students were provided vital information on the role of wildlife especially with respect to the provision of livelihood opportunities to the people around the world.

Since the theme was quite fitting to the place of Uri which is a mountainous densely forested area supporting a significant local population of people who continuously depend on the forest products, The students were apprised about the significance of the wildlife and the role of the forests.

This was followed by the hands on plantation of perennial plants in the Greenhouse present in the college landscape. The students were given the choice of planting the vegetation on their own and also selecting the location as per their liking in the Green House. They participated wholeheartedly and enjoyed the activity very much.

Asiya Khursheed, a 1st semester student of the college was most active in the plantation drive and planted the maximum number of plants in the Green House. Accordingly she won the 1st place and was followed by Gulnaz Bano of 1st Semester securing second place in the plantation drive.

The event was organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences of the college.
