Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) girl students displayed an exciting selection of posters, paintings, objects and documents pertaining to the struggle of women and important provisions on the right to equal education in the constitution and in the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) in two exhibitions held at Women’s College Lawns and Cultural Education Centre (CEC) on November 28 and November 30 respectively on the theme, ‘Reclamation’.

The exhibitions were held under the aegis of the Women’s College and the Centre for Women’s Studies as a part of the British Council Action-Research Project on ‘Gender Equality in Higher Education’ in which AMU is a partner with Brunel University, London, SPPU Pune and nine other institutions.

“These outstanding displays of chronicles from the past and organized struggle shine a light on how we have achieved gender equality and women leadership in academics and various other spheres of life”, said Prof Naima Khatoon (Principal, Women’s College).

Prof Azra Musavi (Director, Centre for Women’s Studies) remarked: “The research papers, documents and art pieces on display portray participants’ ideas of gender equality, women rights, and empowerment. Artworks that were submitted by the students of the Fine Arts Section of Women’s College on the theme, ‘Women’s Belonging’ illustrated the many issues revolving around gender equality”.

Prof F S Sherani (Coordinator, Cultural Education Centre) and Prof Mohammad Wasim Ali (AMU Proctor) urged students and teachers to raise awareness on women issues to maintain positive views on women’s leadership and respect for all women in the society.

“The project aims at mainstreaming good gender practices and promoting gender sensitization at the university campus. It is an initiative that provides an avenue to reflect on women’s contributions”, said Dr Shadab Bano (AMU Resource Person of the British Council Action Research Project).

The exhibitions also featured a ‘Performance Poetry’ session in which students from various university departments and faculties recited poems on gender equality and struggles.

AMU researchers Zainab Naqvi, Oroosa Anwar, Aafia Rizvi curated the exhibitions with the help of students of the Centre for Women’s Studies, Fine Arts section of Women’s College and members of the University Debating and Literary Club (UDLC).
