Government Degree College Sidhra, Jammu organized an online lecture on the theme “Drug Abuse : Awareness and Management

 

Jammu: The “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” is celebrated annually on 26th June to raise awareness regarding the major problem that illicit drugs create in the society and to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. This day is used as a day to stimulate a sense of responsibility among people around the world, especially youngsters and teenagers towards creating a safe, healthy and happy society. The theme of the current year’s “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” is “Share Facts on Drugs, Save Lives.”

As a contributing step towards combating misinformation regarding drugs and sharing the facts on drugs – from health risks to solutions, prevention, care, and treatment of this grave social problem, Anti Drugs and Rehabilitation Cell of Government Degree College Sidhra, Jammu under the patronage and guidance of Principal Dr. Monika Sharma organized an online lecture on the theme “Drug Abuse : Awareness and Management” on 25 June 2021 at 11.00 a.m. The resource person for the event was Prof. Vinay Lata, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Government College of Education, Jammu.

The programme inaugurated with a welcome address by Prof. Deepa Kak, Assistant Professor of Education. It proceeded further with a highly informative lecture by the resource person for the occasion. To begin with, she clarified many misconceptions that general public have about drug abusers and drug addicts. Further, through a wonderful video she portrayed the journey from experimentation to drug addiction i.e. how a person initially starts taking drugs on an experimental basis and slowly and gradually becomes an addict to them. Through her lecture, she made the participants well aware of the commonly abused drugs, routes of drugs usages, subtle and serious symptoms of drug abuse and repercussions of consuming drugs and its treatment. She strongly emphasised upon the participants to play their required role in identifying and helping the drug abusers to come out of this anti-health problem and lead a safe and healthy life and also suggested numerous ways to control this problem such as circulating only evidence based information collected from authentic and verified sources like UNODC, using social media to share factual information on drugs etc. Lastly, she also shared information about various drug deaddiction and rehabilitation centres. The participants participated in the event with great zeal and enthusiasm and had a vibrant and lively discussion with the resource person.

The event was organised by Prof. Deepa Kak, Convener, Anti Drugs and Rehabilitation Cell and co-ordinated by Prof. Shonima Malhotra, Dr. Satbir Kour ,Prof. Meesha Bhagat – members of Anti Drugs and Rehabilitation Cell of the college. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Prof. Meesha Bhagat, Assistant Professor of Political Science.
