“Huge demand for Engineers expected in Telecom Industry”, aver Industry experts during ‘Amity Telecom Vision Board Meeting’
Noida: Keeping in view the ever changing market dynamics and the constant need to update and fine-tune the curriculum as per industry needs, Amity Institute of Telecom Engineering and Management organized ‘Amity Telecom Vision Board Meeting’ on 6th October 2017 at Amity University, Noida.
Eminent industry leaders from Telecom & IT industry attended the meeting which included Mr. Rajan S Mathews, Director General, COAI, Mr. Pankaj Mohindroo, President, Indian Cellular Association; Mr. Dinesh Verma, MD, Junipar Networks Ltd; Lt Gen S P Kochhar, CEO, TSSC; Mr. P Balaji, Director Regulatory & CSR, Vodafone, Air Commodore S Motial, Former CMD,ITI & MD & CEO ELCOM, Mr. TR Dua, Director General, TAIPA, Mr. Amit Marwaha, Head End to End Solutions Sales, Nokia Networks; Mr. Karan Kalra, Transformation Head and Head Entertainment & Media, PwC; Mr. Vikas Sehgal, Head Sales India Public, Sterlite Technology Ltd. Lt Gen PD Bhargava- Advisor, Amity Institute of Telecom Engineering and Management welcomed the industry guests and shared progress of last vision board meeting which included “Training Course to address the trained manpower requirement of handset manufacturing and the PCB design sector”, “Training of students on the use of renewable energy technologies”, Industry Training for students during last one year to acquire necessary on the job skills” and “Setting up of Centers of Excellence and introduction of Vocational Programmes”. He highlighted the progress made on several recommendations made by Industry leaders during last Board Meeting.
The Industry leaders gave vision of future scenario in their respective domains and shared the industry expectations from the budding Telecom engineers.
Lt Gen S P Kochhar, CEO, TSSC, while giving his presentation, stated that today Telecom industry has seen a convergence of Telecom with IT and there has been an exponential growth of data driving the Telecom Networks. He shared that in next 2-5 years, there will be huge demand for Engineers in the area of storing and analysis of the Data which include Data Analytics, Internet of Things, Mobile Applications, Robotics, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. He called upon the Institute to nurture skilled and employable students in the upcoming areas of employment in Telecom Sector.
While giving his suggestions, Mr. Vikas Sehgal, Head Sales India Public, Sterlite Technology Ltd. stated that a module on “Emerging Technologies” should be introduced” in 6th semester to the Telecom students since Technology is ever evolving and students need to keep themselves abreast with the latest technologies. He stressed that the curriculum of the module should cut across the entire Telecom field. He also suggested including a module on Soft Skills from II Semester onwards which will act as a stepping stone for students to enter the Telecom industry.
Mr. Anil Gupta, Regional Director, Indus Towers Ltd stated that the designing of mobile towers presently has undergone a sea change; it has become more of innovation and design task. He recommended the Institute to start up a course focusing on inculcating the skills of innovation and design amongst the students.
Mr. Anurag Sharma, Head- Large Deals & Strategy, Enterprises Business, Tech Mahindra suggested that the Institute must re-inforce entrepreneurship amongst the students. He shared that most of the startups, now-a days, are software driven which should be extended to product and hardware driven start –ups. He pressed upon the need for introducing “Hardware Product development” to the students. He averred that students should be encouraged to pursue basic fundamental research and develop new products on their own. He suggested that the Institute should inculcate the culture of continuous learning amongst the students, in the absence of which they may become obsolete in the long run. He suggested that Institute to motivate students to focus on sustainability in all aspects whether they are products, solutions and environment.
Mr. Rajan S Mathews summoned up future vision of IT & Telecom Industry. He also gave industry prospective.
Prof RK Kapur discussed the modalities of joint working between Academia & Industry.
Dr(Prof) Gurinder Singh- Group Vice Chancellor, Amity University shared his thoughts on the important suggestions extended by the industry leaders and assured them that Amity will implement them very soon.
