IIM Kozhikode Creates History; Admits Nearly 60% Women in Latest Batch of Flagship MBA

 Kozhikode: The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode welcomed latest inductees of its flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP), PGP-Liberal Studies and Management (PGP-LSM), PGP-Finance (PGP-F) and Doctoral Programme in Management (PhD); here at the campus today. The new inductees comprising of a total of 631 students have been admitted into IIMK’s regular, full-time programmes:  28th batch of PGP (497 students), 05th batch of PGP-LSM (53 students), 05th batch of PGP-F (53 students) and 18th batch of DPM (Ph.D) (28 students) programmes of the institute, to make it the largest IIMK cohort till date. Mr Arun Kohli, Managing Director and Country Head of India, Morgan Stanley was the Chief Guest for the inauguration ceremony which was presided over by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director IIM Kozhikode.

IIM Kozhikode has created history this year, by admitting 59% female students for its flagship PGP, which is now into its 28th year. Considerably bettering its own record among older IIMs in the country and further bolstering its credentials as Diversity Leaders among B-Schools of the country. IIM Kozhikode had first broken the glass ceiling, when PGP-17 batch recorded 54% women in the year 2013. 2021 was another landmark year in terms of Gender Diversity for this IIM as it again breached the 50% mark in admitting women students.

For 2024, PGP-LSM 05 has a batch strength of 53 students with 58% female students. PGP-Fin has also registered an intake on 53 students this year. The PhD Pgramme (DP) now into its 18th batch inducted 28 students comprising of 13 female students. As a testimony to IIMK’s growing global reputation 15 international students from USA, UK, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Germany, Canada joined the largest IIMK cohort through GMAT and CAT. This is the highest number of International students inducted into IIMK for its two-year full time MBA programmes.

Not to be left behind on the academic diversity front, IIM Kozhikode has registered an impressive 45% entry of non-engineers to this latest batch of the flagship. For all the three full-time MBA programmes taken together the academic diversity numbers stands at a record 49% for non-engineers making into the three different PG programmes. Students come from diverse non-engineering background such as Sciences, Humanities, Arts, Commerce, Medical (MBBS), BDS Pharmacy, Law and Chartered Accountancy. 34 % of the batch comprises of fresher’s and the remaining 66 % of the batch comes with an average work experience of 02 years.

Overall IIMK has students from 28 states and union territories, with 75% students from non-metros. Maharashtra accounts for the highest number of students (79), followed by Uttar Pradesh (43) and the home state of Kerala accounts for 41 students.

Chief Guest, Mr Arun KohliCountry Head of India, Morgan Stanley congratulated the latest cohort for cracking the tough selection process and joining this leading B-School. He recounted his impressive corporate journey from humble origins and encouraged students to never let go opportunities that are bound to come their way owing to a resurgent India making giant global strides. He further inspired students to be the best versions of themselves by aiming high and focusing on learning with an open mind, as education is a lifetime process.

Welcoming the latest entrants to the fastest growing IIM, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee added “At IIM Kozhikode, we take immense pride in being a pioneer in promoting gender diversity among Indian B-Schools. This year, we are thrilled to announce that we have yet again achieved a significant milestone with close to 60% female students, the highest ever in our history. We have continually endeavored to create an inclusive academic community where varied perspectives and experiences enrich the learning process and prepare our students to become global leaders. Our decade-long initiative has not only transformed our institute but has also raised the stake of women in management across the country, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future in business leadership.” He further spoke about the importance of the 3 Es: Ekagrata (Focus) –  The Economy of attention; Ecological Vision – larger perspective for a larger time-frame and Excellence at Work – where reflection follows action.

An innovative immersion programme (17-19 June) kick-started the introduction to IIMK for the new entrants. It was a novel initiative which has been designed to instill the spirit of the vision of IIM Kozhikode – “Globalizing Indian Thought by inculcating Authenticity (Satyam), Sustainability (Nityam) and Fulfilment (Purnam).” This was followed by a seven-day orientation programme (20-27 June) from distinguished IIMK alumni having expertise in different industries and functional domains were also scheduled through the orientation. Pedagogy and Case orientation sessions by expert IIMK faculty to align the students to IIMK’s teaching methods Workshops and Talks on POSH, inclusivity, diversity and equal opportunities and mental wellbeing were also conducted by the institute for its latest entrants.
