IIM Kozhikode to host the 6th All India Conference of China Studies (AICCS)

Report by India Education bureau, Kozhikode: Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) will be hosting the 6th All India Conference of China Studies (AICCS) in collaboration with the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi from December 12-14, 2013.
The annual All India Conference of China Studies (AICCS) is a flagship event of the Institute of China Studies (ICS), New Delhi. This year’s conference in Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode is been partially funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). The principal objective of AICCS is to spread interest and strengthen research in China and East Asian Studies in India.
It is an initiative to provide a knowledge sharing platform to the students and bring together the finest minds in India to discuss about the role of economic reforms in bringing economic well being in China and important lessons it holds for the developing world.
Speaking on the importance of the event, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director, IIMK, says, “In today’s globalized and liberalized economy, India’s development agenda is linked to China’s growth. This conference will create intellectual ferment and an ambience to understand the future of growth of the two nations”. He further adds, “China is today committed to innovation and experimentation. In this they will find an ally in India. The theme of this can aptly be framed as reforms in social transformation in China. We do hope that many ideas will bloom, many schools of thought contend and find a place in this conference.”
The key note speaker and the Chief Guest for the conference is Ashok Kantha, Ambassador Designate to the Peoples’ Republic of China.
Eminent people participating in the conference include diplomats like Saurabh Kumar, Former Indian Ambassador to the UN and Ambassador Kishan Rana.
This conference has participants from Srinagar, Imphal, Gangtok, Indore, Mumbai, including eminent China scholars like Prof. Manoranjan Mohanty, Prof. Alka Acharya, Director, ICS and Professor, JNU and convener of the conference, Prof. Madhavi Thampi to name a few. There is also a delegate participating from China, Dr. Zeng XiangYu, Visiting Fellow in ICS from Sichuan University, China.
The conference seeks to cover the economic reforms called “Socialism with Chinese characteristics” introduced by China in 1978 and its significant impact on contemporary China. The emergence of a socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics has led to constant innovations in the management of state-society relations in the party state leading to a major social transformation of the Chinese society in last three decades. China has made rapid economic progress at a speed unprecedented in world history since 1978 and is projected to become the world’s largest economy by 2029. In this regard the theme of the conference is, ‘Reforms, Management and Social Transformation’.
The conference has attracted unprecedented interest this time with more than 120 abstracts being submitted for consideration out of which 50 papers were selected.
This conference is also unique in the sense that for the first time academics and young researchers working on various aspects of China from politics, foreign policy, society, culture and management are coming together to discuss and share their research on China.
The AICCS is held once every year, in an Indian academic institution where research and teaching on China Studies are conducted. The conference has three principal parts: an examination of the state of the field of China Studies in the country, a special theme for the conference and, a focus on the latest work of MPhil/PhD scholars.
