Shillong : With a view to connecting doyens of the industry with the management academia in a leisurely setting, IIM Shillong hosted the 9th season of its flagship event- Golf Cup 2016, which concluded this Sunday on the 27th of November. With 6000 yards to play across, the picturesque Shillong Golf Course holds the rare distinction of being one of the few natural golf courses in Asia and is often referred to as “Gleneagles of the East”, boasting of a par 70; 18- hole course . As a build up to the event, the institute organised a 6 km marathon – ‘Run for Shillong’ at the dawn of 25th of November, flagged off by Miss Wansuk Myrthong, the first woman from Meghalaya to scale Mt. Everest.
Golf Cup 2016 was officially teed off by Mr. A.L. Hek, M.L.A., Meghalaya and Chairman M.I.D.C, in presence of the Director of the Institute, Prof. Amitabha De on November 26th, 2016. Sponsored by Meghalaya Tourism and co-sponsored by The Union Bank of India, Indian Oil Corporation-Bongaigaon Refinery, Mahindra Rise and hospitality partner CPGE, this year’s event was dedicated to celebrating the spirit of sportsmanship.
The event saw about 130 golfers from the country, including esteemed guests from various government ministries, armed forces and corporates from leading Industry majors like Goldman Sachs, VMware, Titan Company Ltd., Wipro, Red Hat India and Axis Bank to name a few.
The 2 day extravaganza concluded with a Valedictory Ceremony in the presence of Shri Zenith M. Sangma, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs of the State of Meghalaya. Winners of Golf Cup Season 9 were Mr Somprabh Singh of Titan Company Ltd. in the corporate golfer’s Category and Mr Gaurav Bajaj of the Shillong Golf Club in the local golfer’s category.
Golf at IIM Shillong is viewed not just as a sport but a way of life that budding managers need to adopt. “Sports is one field wherein there are no divisions based on caste, creed and colour and hence we must encourage it”- says Mr Sangma. With this aim and even more efforts, Golf Cup-IIM Shillong will continue to get grander with every successive year.
