IIMK-Peekay Steel Calicut Half Marathon 2020 concludes; International runners take home top honours

Kozhikode: The 11th edition of Calicut Half Marathon, organised by IIM Kozhikode in association with Peekay Steel concluded here today as Kozhikode city witnessed participation from more than 5000 enthusiastic runners from all walks of life. The marathon, with “Pursuit of Happiness: Healthy Body, Healthy Mind” as the theme of this year was dominated by International runners (Kenya, Ethiopia) which is a sign of the growing popularity of the marquee event of Calicut city which completes more than a decade of its mission to contribute to the richness of this vibrant city.

The winners of the three race categories are as under:

21 KM Half Marathon (Men):

Atlaw Debebe (Timing – 1:08:13) – Cash Prize 50,000 INR + Vouchers worth 20,000 INR
Victor Vachina (1:08:35) – Cash Prize 20,000 INR
Japhet Rono (1:09:06)- Cash Prize 10,000 INR

21 KM Half Marathon (Women):
Bhirtugar Nagosh Shivage (1:28:07)- Cash Prize 50,000 INR + Vouchers worth 20,000 INR
Lilian Chelimo (1:30:46)- Cash Prize 20,000 INR
Sandhya Kj (1:31:46) – Cash Prize 10,000 INR

10 KM Half Marathon (Men):
Mikiyas Yemata (33:19)- Cash Prize 50,000 INR + Vouchers worth 17,500 INR
Rohit Verma (33:26)- Cash Prize 20,000 INR
Pravesh (34:02)- Cash Prize 10,000 INR
10 KM Half Marathon (Women):
Jackline Jeppenli (40:08)- Cash Prize 50,000 INR + Vouchers worth 17,500 INR
Aasa TP (40:25)- Cash Prize 20,000 INR
Gargi Sharma (41:35)- Cash Prize 10,000 INR

Besides this, participant winners from age group of 45+ (men and women) were also awarded separately with Rs 10,000 INR and a special ‘The Spirit of the Run’ was awarded to the oldest participant Mr Dasan Nair (67 Years).

Earlier, after the flag-off of the Marathon this morning, Prof Debashis Chatterjee, Director IIM Kozhikode, felicitated Arjuna Awardee Mrs. Babita Phogat with IIMK’s ‘National Excellence Award’ to mark the 11th edition of Peekay Steel Calicut Half Marathon. The award is a replica of the ‘Arise Arjuna’ statue present at IIM Kozhikodeand was instituted last year, which was then conferred on Dr Deepa Malik, who was the first Indian woman to win a medal in the Paralympic Games. Speaking on the occasion, Prof.Chatterjee lauded the efforts of the event organisers and appreciated the citizens of Calicut for their enthusiastic response to this year’s edition of Calicut Half Marathon. He added, ”Mrs Babita Phogat is a role model for youngsters across the globe and it gives us immense belief that her presence here will mark a new beginning in the future of the Calicut Marathon. IIM Kozhikode has always believed that women are the driving force behind society’s acceptance of social causes and the astounding presence of women participants here at the event is a testimony to that. ”
