IIT Jammu, ESF Unite for J&K’s Largest Climate Clock Assembly and Display Event

In a significant collaborative effort, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu, in partnership with Energy Swaraj Foundation (ESF), has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully assembling 40 Climate Clocks. This event marks the largest Climate Clock Assembly and Display in the region, held at the Open Air Theatre at IIT Jammu.

A gathering of approximately 200 students from 28 institutions, including local schools and colleges, participated in the assembly of the DIY Climate Clock. Functioning as a real-time reminder of the pressing need to address climate change, the clocks were meticulously assembled by students in teams and will find their place at respective institutions. The aim is to encourage individuals to adopt behaviours that actively reduce their carbon footprint.

The event witnessed the esteemed presence of Shri Roshan Jaggi, IFS, who graced the occasion as the chief guest, accompanied by Prof Manoj Singh Gaur, Director IIT Jammu, Prof Chetan Singh Solanki, Founder ESF, and Prof Anurag Misra, Dean IPM IIT Jammu. Shri Jaggi, in his address, urged students to recognize the dual responsibility – individual and collective – in mitigating the climate crisis. He emphasised the importance of each person’s contribution towards environmental preservation. Drawing from his experiences, Shri Jaggi shared inspiring anecdotes to motivate students to translate principles into action.

During the welcome address, Prof Manoj Singh Gaur expressed his gratitude to all participants, emphasising that events of this nature underscore the institution’s commitment to a sustainable and environmentally conscious future. He conveyed IIT Jammu’s pride in contributing to such initiatives and affirmed a commitment to exploring innovative ways to positively impact our planet.

Prof Chetan Singh Solanki, a Professor at the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay and the founder of ESF, commended the students for their efforts and provided a strategic action plan to fulfil the vision of Climate Responsiveness. Encouraging a sense of urgency, he stated, “The right time is right now!”

Associate Professor, Dr Arun Kumar Verma, from IIT Jammu, presented a sincere vote of thanks to all the participants, the staff and students from IIT Jammu for making the event a huge success.

As a tangible outcome of the event, each participating institute received the assembled Climate Clock, which will be prominently displayed at their premises to raise awareness about the critical importance of preserving our climate.

This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment towards fostering environmental consciousness and sustainable practices for a healthier planet.
