IIT Kanpur starts five-day Training Program on Smart Distribution System and Storage
~ The five-day program will run till May 2, 2023
Kanpur : The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has started a training program on Smart Distribution System and Storage to provide participants with knowledge about the integration of smart distribution systems with the electrical grid. The course was launched with an inaugural session on April 28, 2023. Delegates from KESCo, Synergy Systems & Solutions, TERI, IITs, NITs, and other academic institutions, are attending the five-day program, which will run till May 2, 2023.
The course is being coordinated by Prof. Ankush Sharma and Prof. Alok Ranjan Verma from the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Kanpur. The inaugral session was graced by Prof. A. R. Harish (Dean of Research and Development), Prof. K. V. Srivastava (Head of Electrical Engineering department), Mr. A. K. Saxena (Senior Director Energy and Fuel, TERI), along with program coordinators Dr. Ankush Sharma and Dr. Alok Ranjan Verma.
The main objective of the course is to familiarize participants from various academic institutions, R&D organizations, and industries with different concepts and developments in Smart Distribution Systems and Storage. This will enable them to understand the role of modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure in helping to monitor and control power systems more effectively.
With the increase in penetration of Smart Grid Technologies in power systems, there has been a growing demand for real-time visualization, monitoring, and control of the power system. The present-day electricity sector is witnessing increased shares of renewables, storage, EV charging stations, microgrids, intelligent sensors and controllers, automation, and smart metering at different levels in the network. This leads to distribution networks requiring cyber-secure Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) tools. The large penetration of renewables, being intermittent in nature, will pose system stability and power quality concerns, which will require proper compensation and controls. These challenges faced by the power system network will be discussed in detail during the duration of the course.
The training program is a great opportunity for industry professionals, researchers, and students to gain a deeper understanding of the integration of smart distribution systems and storage with the electrical grid. It will equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of the evolving power sector.
