IIT Madras emerges as the Undisputed Leader in Higher Education in India
Institute has been Ranked No.1 in India in ‘Overall’ for 4th consecutive year and in ‘Engineering’ category for 7th year in a row, in the NIRF –India Rankings 2022
CHENNAI : In an extraordinary and historic achievement, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has claimed the top honours in National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) – India Rankings 2022 yet again, cementing its position as the Premier Higher Education Institute in India.
IIT Madras retained its No. 1 ranking in ‘Overall’ category for the Fourth Consecutive Year and in ‘Engineering’ Category for the Seventh Consecutive Year.
In the ‘Research Institutions’ category IIT Madras was Ranked #2, same as of last year. The Institute improved its position in ‘Management’ Category, securing 10th Position this year, bettering last year’s position of 13.
Shri. Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Education Minister, Government of India, announced the results of NIRF 2022 today (15th July 2022) at an event held in the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
Congratulating all the Institutes that took part in NIRF Ranking, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Education Minister, Government of India, said, “Congratulations to all. From the Institutes that have come on top in the NIRF Rankings, it is clear that NIRF is objective, impartial and qualitative.”
Further, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan said, “PM had the vision to make sure HEIs should be able to showcase their outstanding performance to the young aspirants…21st Century will be called knowledge based economy, which will be primarily because of innovation, entrepreneurship and digitalisation. India holds over 40% of digital transactions in global trade.”
The awards were received by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, in person, who was accompanied by Prof. Manu Santhanam, Dean, Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (ICSR), IIT Madras.
Congratulating all the stakeholders, from students to faculty and non-teaching staff for their hard work that has resulted in such extraordinary performance, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “I dedicate this achievement to all the students, staff and faculty of my Institute. Special thanks to all the frontline workers who kept the Institute ticking during the Covid times. Thanks to the Ministry of Education, Government of India for their continued support and encouragement. NIRF process gives a detailed feedback regarding our strengths and weaknesses. While we will continue to leverage on our strengths we will address the weaknesses to march forward.”
IIT Madras has also been recognized as an ‘Institution of Eminence’ (IoE) in September 2019 by the Government of India. As an Institute of Eminence, IIT Madras has set certain targets for next 5, 10 and 15 years in Academics, Research and Development, and Internationalization, among others.
Over the years the institute has grown from strength-to-strength. As part of its continuous endeavour towards internationalization, IIT Madras has launched nine International Interdisciplinary Master’s degree programs (I2MP), starting in July 2022. The program brings together innovative curricula with award-winning pedagogy and research methodology of IIT Madras. These unique two year M.Tech. degree programs will have International students undertaking several core and elective courses, in addition to a research project in their area of interest. Additionally, an inter-disciplinary M.Tech. in Energy Systems will be offered to Nepalese + International students at the Kathmandu University campus, starting July 2022 as a joint degree program.
In consonance with the National Education Policy (NEP), IIT Madras has launched several initiatives including the first-of-its-kind online B.Sc. degree in Programming and Data Science in the country that provides no age bar and multiple exit options, has had very good reach from people in diverse fields and age groups. So far, 12,000 students have been admitted in the age group between 17 and late sixties.
In 2021-22, IIT Madras received sanction for 186 Ministry-sponsored projects for a total value of Rs. 611.46 crore that is almost 70 per cent more than last year. Collaboration with the industry has been increasing year after year and this year 609 consultancy and industry-sponsored research projects have been received amounting to Rs.279.61 crore.
With IoE funding, IIT Madras is creating Centres of Excellence to encourage inter-disciplinary research that can lead to path-breaking discoveries and innovations. These Centres are in emerging areas of science and technology, have strong international linkages, are highly outcome-focused, and will have intimate networks with the IITM Research Park and IITM Incubation Cell for commercialization of ideas, and with the Institute’s IP Office for patent filings and technology transfer/ licensing.
IIT Madras, which has also bagged the top position in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) for the last three years, has created a strong entrepreneurial eco-system that encourages students to become job-generators.
Started in 2015, NIRF outlines a methodology to rank educational institutions across the country. The parameters used for ranking broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcome,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception.”
