IIT Madras Pravartak to train Engineering Students in Manufacturing & Production

This 12-Day training program, which will offer Placement Assistance for high-performing students, will focus on Digital manufacturing; 10th Oct 2024 being the last date to register

CHENNAI : IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation is partnering with SWAYAM Plus to launch a new initiative to train Engineering students with mechanical / manufacturing / production background with industry-ready technical skills.

Placement assistance will be provided for students who excel in the program. Pravartak will select the students for the training program to impart industry-ready skills. The training program will be at IIT Madras Campus.

The last date to apply is 10th October 2024. The training program will be from 14th to 26th October 2024. Those interested can register through the following link – (https://iitmpravartak.org.in/digital_mfg_practice)

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Prof. R. Sarathi, Dean (Planning), IIT Madras, said, “Skills development is a National movement to provide Indians with opportunities to develop potential to the fullest extent throughout their life, regardless of their prior experience. Through this movement, the skills, passion and contributions of every individual will drive India’s next phase of development towards an advanced economy and inclusive society.”

Prof. R. Sarathi added, “This course aims to bridge the gap between idealized concepts learnt from the foundational courses in engineering and the real world. Our experience clearly indicates that there is a need to strengthen the skills needed in general engineering and to build an intuition in relation to that.  The contents of the training program for engineering students are identified through the skill gap between engineering curriculum and practicing engineer. Content of course is designed to cover the modules Modelling, Basic Manufacturing, Digital manufacturing and Entrepreneurship.”

IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation is a Section 8 Company housing a Technology Innovation Hub on Sensors, Networking, Actuators and Control Systems. It is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under its National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems and hosted by IIT Madras.

The Highlights of the Program include an industry-relevant curriculum, designed in collaboration with leading Industry experts to deliver hands-on in latest technology and processes in Mechanical / Manufacturing / Production sectors

The Central Skill Training Facility (CSTF) at IIT Madras will provide placement assistance and connect final year students with start-ups/Leading mechanical/ manufacturing companies. This course will empower students with the skills required to meet the growing demand for qualified professionals in the Mechanical/ Manufacturing Service Industry.

This will be a classroom-based hands-on training program. The Course content includes practice on 3D modelling, 3D printing, CAM, CNC programming and CNC machining. Also, course provides knowledge on the stages of product development, prototyping and testing.

Ø  In-take Eligibility Criteria: Engineering Students who have complete their degree or doing their final year with mechanical/manufacturing/production Background

Ø  Benefits – Skill the students to enable them to join any manufacturing, R&D and product development start-up companies.

This program will provide completely hands-on training with a subsidized fee of INR 6,000/- + GST. Accommodation will be offered at IIT Madras campus at a basic cost of INR 650/- per day per student, which includes food and stay. Request for accommodation can be made on/before 10th October 2024

This course offers a comprehensive and practical approach to bridge the gap between theoretical engineering concepts and real-world manufacturing processes. With a right blend of theory (20%) and experiential understanding (80%), skills such as simple quantification, back of the envelope calculations, quick engineering drawings, use of right tools, classification / taxonomy fundamentals and systems approach to planning and execution will be introduced and strengthened.

Students will gain hands-on experience with the basic manufacturing, additive manufacturing (3D Printing), Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM).

SWAYAM Plus is a joint initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India and IIT Madras, launched in line with National Education Policy’s (NEP 2020) focus on promoting and encouraging employability-focused, skilling courses. It aims to build employable skills among graduates across sectors critical to India’s growth. The aim is also to align industry skills with academic courses, thereby bridging the gap.
