IIT Roorkee Celebrates the International Women’s Day with the SHE Lecture Series-2022

Roorkee : Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) organized the “SHE Lecture Series-2022” on the occasion of International Women’s Day which was held virtually from March2nd, 2022 to March 8th, 2022. The lecture series was organized in association with the Gender Advancement for Transforming Institutions (GATI) Program, IIT Roorkee, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), Wellness Centre and the Technology Incubation and Entrepreneurship Development Society (TIDES), IIT Roorkee.

The opening lecture was delivered by Dr. Pratibha Jolly, PI, DST-GATI, and Academic Consultant NAAC. The event commenced with the poetry recitation by the student winners of the GATI Poetry Competition in the English and Hindi category. Following this, the second and third lecture of this series started on March 4th, 2022 and March 5th, 2022, respectively. The fourth and fifth lectures of the SHE Lecture Series were held on March 7th, 2022. The sessions were held on topics of mental wellness, work-life balance, and the role of women in entrepreneurship and financial independence. Last three lectures and the final session of the SHE Lecture Series was held on the occasion of the “International Women’s Day on the March 8th, 2022.

 

The final session was chaired by, Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director IIT Roorkee where he spoke about the implementation of GATI at IIT Roorkee and announced that IIT Roorkee will establish the inclusion and Diversity Committee which will be a standing committee. Additionally, the lecture series was delivered by women leaders and experts in various areas such as gender sensitization, sexual harassment, equity and diversity in STEM, the role of women in technology and innovation, leadership in STEMM and financial independence and work-life balance.

Taru Sharma, Director, National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), Hyderabad, Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Ms. Helena Mattingley, Head, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Kings College, London, UK, Dr. Anita Gupta, Head, Technology Missions Division,Dr. Nisha Mendiratta, Head, Climate Change Program and WISE KIRAN Division, DST-India, and Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director IIT Roorkee delivered their speech on the occasion.

 

The entire event was coordinated by Prof. Pranita P. Sarangi, Nodal officer, GATI-IIT Roorkee in association with Prof. Ranjana Pathania, chairperson ICC, Prof. Kiran Ambatipudi, Associate Dean of Students’ Welfare, Wellness and Mr. Azam Ali Khan, CEO, TIDES-IIT Roorkee in support with Prof. Manish Shrikhande, Dean of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy and Chairperson GATI Self-Assessment Committee, IIT Roorkee. Additionally, the organizing team was assisted by Mr. Aditya Goyal, Project Assistant-GATI. The lecture series was successfully organized with full enthusiasm and wholehearted participation from the guests and participating delegates

 

Prof. Pranita P. Sarangi, Associate professor, Department of Biosceinces and Bioengineering and Nodal officer, GATI-IIT Roorkee, said, “The scenery of the world for women has changed over time and decades. Recognizing the role of women in science, not only as beneficiaries, but also as agents of change at all levels of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. I would like to thank everyone who made this event possible with their participation to further the motif of diversity and inclusion.”

 

Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director IIT Roorkee, highlighted, “IIT Roorkee as an Institute has come a long way in celebrating the participation and contributions of women. I can see a tremendous rise in the sensitivity of our male stakeholders towards the need to be more inclusive and diverse. In this ongoing journey, true to its name the GATI project has played a transformative role. I am happy to share that the Board of IIT Roorkee has constituted new standing Diversity and Inclusion committee to help the Institute continue walking on this path. Every six months the committee will submit to the Board a report on its progress.”
