IIT Roorkee Install Sanitary Pad Vending Machines at the campus

Roorkee : IIT Roorkee is all set to install Sanitary Pad Vending Machines in their premises, with its Social initiative HASI FOR GIRLS (Health and Sanitation Initiation). IIT Roorkee set up four Sanitary Pad vending machines in girl’s washrooms. HASI for Girls initiative is a part of IIT Roorkee Cognizance. Cognizance is the annual tech fest of IIT Roorkee.

Tushar Bairagi (Overall Coordinator), Cognizance 2019 said “The vending machines are electronically operated and will provide ease to the girls in case of emergency. Menstrual myths have a long history rooted in our lack of understanding of the human body and our habit of deductive reasoning based on symptoms. But our beliefs and practices must change with time and with scientific advancement”.

On the occasion Pad women of Indian Ms. Maya Vishwakarma said that Menstruation awareness is increase in India people are now start talking about this issue. Menstruation is considered as taboo, for more awareness it should be included in education System, and student should also teach Menstruation Management.

It wasn’t until the mid-18th century that menstruation was known to be related to ovulation. Scientific experiments to test the factor of “impurity” in menstrual blood were not undertaken until the 1920s. It is then understandable that some of the myths our ancestors lived by came to be because of the lack of information regarding what exactly was going on inside our bodies. No matter where a girl grows up in the world, there’s a very good chance that she will be inundated with endless illusions and misconceptions about menstruation, as no bodily function is more universally misrepresented and ubiquitously tabooed.

A recent study suggests “In India, 50% of all girls have no knowledge about menstruation and how to manage it when they have their first period. We believe that a world where every woman and girl can manage her menstruation hygienically, with confidence and without stigma is possible”. In the modern era of advancement, people are ready to learn fact instead of the following myth that is completely opposite to the reality.

It’s also important to know the context in which some practices were suggested once upon a time in order to debunk myths with a logical and nuanced explanation. It is a long road ahead for the emancipation of women from the stigma of menstruation but like any other journey, this too needs to begin with the small step of breaking free from the anathema and discomfiture and exhorting others to do the same by using the power of reason.

IIT Roorkee Tech fest to be conducted on March 15-17 2019.
