Delhi: On the lines of Digital India campaign, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) floated a tender for enabling 38 Central Universities within India to make them Wi-Fi enabled. Amidst a fierce competition amongst 12 companies, IL&FS Technologies Limited (ITL) won the tender after being evaluated on various parameters set by the ministry.
The purpose of this project is to provide all the 38 Central Universities a Wi-Fi enabled Campus network which would be connected to the National Knowledge Network (NKN). MHRD has envisaged National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT) as a centrally sponsored scheme to leverage the potential of ICT, in providing personalized and interactive knowledge modules over the internet/intranet for all the learners in these universities anytime and anywhere.
Implementation involves surveying the campus of the universities to understand the area, access points, switches, controllers and other important factors. Later, designing, installing, commissioning, integrating and maintaining of active network components takes place at the campus. ITL will also provide training to the universities along with onsite support for 2 years.
Basis the price and the quality of services provided by ITL, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was the first University to accept the project in their campus which is the largest campus in India with 28kms diameter. The project has commenced at BHU and is expected to get completed within a few months.
The implementation of the project will be extended to three more Universities namely – Nagaland University, H.N.B. Garhwal University and Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan in October
