Imperial College London Celebrates International Scholars and Expands Programmes

Imperial celebrated the achievements of its international scholars as we continue to grow our scholarship programmes.

Imperial College London – one of the world’s most international universities – welcomed more than a hundred international scholars from around the globe to its campuses this year.

Supported through various scholarship programmes, students from places such as Brazil, France, Germany, India, Nigeria, Singapore and Turkey joined courses at Imperial to further their education.

Professor Hugh Brady, President of Imperial said: “Imperial is not just a world-leading institution but a world-changing institution, in part because of the work of our international scholars. We recently launched our new strategy – Science for Humanity – and internationlisation is an essential part of that strategy. We now want to grow our scholarship programme even further.”

To celebrate the achievements of our international scholars, Imperial welcomed ambassadors, diplomats, funders, academic leaders and industry partners to a special event. Some of the international scholars shared their stories and experiences from their time at the university and presented some of their ideas, research and projects.

Professor Maggie Dallman, Vice-President (International), said: “We are proud to be one of the world’s most international universities and we know that our excellence derives from diverse minds that bring different perspectives from all over the world.”

Star scholars

Dana Aljarrah is a Bseisu scholar from Jordan. Dana studies MSc Translational Neuroscience in the Department of Brain Sciences.

Dana said: “What attracted me to Imperial was that it is the only university in the UK with a focus on STEM and it creates world-leading research. It is also ranked first in the UK for research outcomes, environment and impact. This confirmed to me that Imperial is the ideal platform to pursue my long-term career goals. Imperial is also well connected to other institutes, hospitals and universities, and because of that I have met and been taught by researchers and scientists that I looked up to.”

Mo Elgadal, from Sudan, is a Chevening Scholar studying MSc Sustainable Energy Futures in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Mo said: “At Imperial I’ve been fortunate to have made friends with students from all around the world. Imperial can be challenging sometimes, but that is part of the experience. And looking into the coming six months, the possibilities seem boundless. I’m filled with anticipation for what’s yet to come, and what Imperial will offer next.”

Tahreem Shaukat is a British Council GREAT scholar, from Pakistan. Tahreem studies MSc Climate Change, Management and Finance in the Business School.

Tahreem said: “My experience at Imperial so far has been exceptional, particularly the diversity and inclusive environment fostered here. Interacting with peers from diverse backgrounds has enriched my learning journey, providing valuable insights and perspectives. The academic rigor combined with the supportive faculty and community has empowered me to pursue my goal of creating a positive impact with confidence.”

Future Scholarship opportunities

Imperial has launched four new scholarship programmes in the last year which will see their first students join in the 2024/5 academic year.

India: Future Leaders Scholarship

Last year Imperial launched the Future Leaders Scholarship to support 30 talented MSc students from India to study at Imperial. To nurture the full capacity of the next generation of science leaders, the fund will support equal numbers of men and women scholars.

Ghana, Greece, Malaysian, Mexico: Imperial – British Council GREAT Masters Scholarship

Imperial has announced four new partial scholarships co-funded by the British Council for students from Ghana, Greece, Malaysia and Mexico.

ASEAN countries: Women in STEM Scholarships 

In partnership with the British Council, the scholarship provides the opportunity for six outstanding women students from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, or Timor-Leste to study a one-year Master’s course at Imperial.

Lebanon: CMA CGM Excellence Fund 

Imperial has launched a new scholarship program for Lebanese Master’s students, supported by the French shipping and logistics company, CMA CGM Group, which will help fund 18 Master’s scholars from Lebanon over the next three years.
