Indian Project Recognized With Global Education Award By WISE
Doha: The work of Barefoot College’s Solar Electrification with Enriched Education on women’s education and empowerment has been recognized by the 2020 WISE Awards. Every year, WISE, Qatar Foundation’s flagship education initiative, presents six Awards to the world’s most innovative education projects. In addition to the recognition, the winners will receive publicity, networking opportunities, and a $20,000 (US) prize. They will be celebrated in a global online ceremony on October 28th , 2020.
Barefoot College’s approach to education is to make it sustainable and accessible to everyone.
Its holistic program for women and girls combines an adaptable curriculum called “ENRICHE” and solar electrification. The customizable curriculum teaches women digital and financial literacy, civil and human rights, as well as health and entrepreneurship, and microenterprise production. Once these skills are acquired, these women are provided with solar electrification tools. This approach benefits the whole community and the ripple effect can be scaled across the whole community. This approach is made sustainable and self-renewing by the security of renewable energy and the stable income arising from small local businesses. So far, it has benefitted 2.2 million people in over 90 countries.
