Innovation Prize 2023 Celebrates Excellence: RWTH Spin-offs Recognized for Their Impact

“Accure” was founded in 2020 by Dr. Kai-Philipp Kairies, Dr. Georg Angenendt and Dr. Johannes Palmer is founded. The company emerged from the Chair of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage System Technology headed by Professor Dirk Uwe Sauer. Dirk Uwe Sauer and co-founder Kai-Philipp Kairies accepted the award in the “ innovation2business ” on Monday evening in Düsseldorf. Accure monitors the performance, safety and longevity of batteries, based on extensive data and the use of AI. “This honor means a lot to us,” says Sauer, “because we are committed to our research To change things.” Technologies, according to the head of the chair and head of the largest European research group for battery systems, must be brought into the economy. It is precisely this achievement that has now been recognized, the jury said: “The “innovation2business” prize category honors personalities who Outstanding ideas for product or process innovations have developed a successful business model.” In this category, a tandem of entrepreneurial personality and innovation provider is always awarded. The category is 50.000 euros, the prize money is earmarked for research purposes.

The evening was even more exciting than for “Accure” for Lilian Schwich, one of the three founders of “Cylib”. If Accure had already been chosen as the winner for some time, Lilian Schwich had to pitch against two other nominees on Monday evening; the audience decided on site the winning project in the “innovation4transformation” category. She had three minutes to convince the local audience about “Cylib”. Founded by Lilian, her husband Dr. Gideon Schwich and Paul Sabarny, a process has been developed over the years at RWTH Aachen University to reprocess all components of a lithium-ion battery. “We can recover all components and close the gap in the circular economy,” says Lilian Schwich. This is significantly more effective and also more environmentally friendly than the current state of the art. The concept also convinced the audience on site, “Cylib” won in the “innovation4transformation” category. “The award is also recognition for the long, hard time of research,” said Lilian Schwich, “we spent many hours, days, weeks and weekends on research.” A lot of the entire team’s energy went into this time and the award now recognize this research, “we are really happy about that.” The audience award “innovation4transformation” honors personalities whose innovative products, solutions or business models contribute in an outstanding way to solving transformation challenges (e.g. decarbonization, closed cycles, digitalization). It is endowed with 25,000 euros. “Cylib” won in the “innovation4transformation” category.
