Interdisciplinary Biotechnology Unit organized International Webinar

Aligarh: The Interdisciplinary Biotechnology Unit of AMU organized International webinar on emergence of antimicrobial Resistance under the banner of “Antibiotic Awareness week” on 23 November, 2020.

The Keynote Speaker Prof Patrice Nordmann (Eminent Scientist, Head Department of Medicine and Molecular Biology, University of Fribourg, Switzerland ), talked about the global emergence on antibiotic resistance. He showed concern that the major reservoirs of spread of the resistant bacteria are India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China and if it is not controlled it could lead to another pandemic in next few years.

In his presidential remark the Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Prof Wasim Ahmad praised the progress of Biotechnology and its role in Faculty of Life Sciences ranking and emphasized the importance of holding such webinar in the time of new normal global pandemic. He also mentioned that use and misuse of antibiotic need to be stopped.

In his welcome address Prof Asad U Khan, coordinator and convener of webinar, mentioned that it was the 3rd webinar being organized by Biotechnology Unit in last 10 months and also highlighted the progress of Unit. He informed that the students passed out from Biotechnology Department are well-placed in top national laboratories of the country and abroad.

The second speaker Dr Alessandra Piccirilli from University of L?Aquila, Italy, talked on Molecular Diagnostics of antimicrobial resistance genes.

Participants from Italy, Bahrain, Portugal, Malaysia and UK were present along with many others from different Indian institutions and AMU departments.

Prof Waseem A Siddiqui of Biotechnology gave vote of thanks while the programme was compared by Ms Farheen Akhtar, Research Scholar of Biotechnology.
