International day against violence and bullying at school including cyberbullying

4 November 2020 will mark the second edition of the new International Day against Violence and Bullying at School including Cyberbullying, under the theme “Tackling cyberbullying and other forms of online violence involving children and young people.”

We see this as a critical moment to bring much needed attention to the issue of school bullying – the most prevalent form of violence in schools, which affects almost one in three learners, and impacts education and wellbeing outcomes.

UNESCO aims to build global momentum to end bullying in schools by raising awareness of the issue, sharing ways to address and eliminate violence in schools and mobilizing governments, experts and the educational community to come & work together in preventing violence and bullying in schools.

Bullying in schools deprives millions of children and young people of the fundamental right to education. A recent UNESCO report reveals that more than 30% of the world’s students have been victims of bullying, with negative consequences on academic achievement, school dropout, and physical and mental health. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been increasing cases of bullying especially cyberbullying experienced by both students and teachers.

On this International Day against violence and bullying at school, including cyberbullying, the schools are encouraged to conduct activities to enhance awareness on prevention of violence and bullying in Schools, and work together to make our schools and educational institutions more safe and vibrant for all learners.
