‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ at AMU

Aligarh : Fifty differently able students received assistive devices such as wheel chairs, tricycles, angel recorders, headphones, pen drives, smart canes and foldable sticks in the ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ observation at the Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The programme Chief Guest, Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said, “AMU is committed to remove all obstacles faced by the differently able students in their daily life by providing them the required facilities. We make sure that all the welfare schemes for these students are duly implemented and that they live in a barrier free environment with all the opportunities which include the necessary reservations.

 

AMU Registrar, IPS Officer, Mr Mohammed Imran called for empowerment of differently able people and their increased assimilation in the socio-economic aspects of life.

 

He also spoke about the needs and challenges of people with disabilities and suggested increased technology use to assist them.

 

Prof Afifullah Khan (OSD Development) pressed the need for engaging the differently able students in confidence building programs.

 

Prof Abdul Aleem (Dean Student Welfare) assured the availability of residential hostels with special facilities like ramps and lifts for differently able students.

 

Prof Manvendra Kumar Pundhir (Coordinator, Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies) pointed out that AMU has always been proactive in implementing all schemes for students with disabilities and that there is also a special roster reservation register for them at the university.

 

Dr Asif Ali (Deputy Coordinator, Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies) with Dr Fazila Shahnawaz and Dr Waseem Raza Khan coordinated the programme.
