‘International Human Rights Day’ at AMU
Aligarh: Faculty members and students brought attention to global equality, peace, justice, and protection of human rights and ways to honor these values in the symposium on ‘Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All’ held at the Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on December 10 to observe the ‘International Human Rights Day’.
“Human rights extend to all issues around gender, age and racial inequality impacting millions of people across the globe and since many people are not equipped to advocate for themselves when these issues arise, it is imperative that efficient advocacy programmes are conducted to empower people”, said Prof Iqbalur Rehman (Chairman, Department of Political Science).
Delivering a talk on human rights issues, Prof Rachana Kaushal pressed the need for creating awareness among people about their basic rights and standing for all human values.
Bollywood lyricist and AMU alumnus, Arafat Mehmood recited powerful poems on human rights.
Prof Md Nafees Ahmad Ansari (Symposium Chairperson) spoke on the relevance of human rights and its positive and equitable relationship with governance.
Dr Md Adil Ghaznavi (Programme Convener) talked about the significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Parvez Alam highlighted pertinent human rights issues and how to address them.
Areeb delineated the concept of human dignity as the core element of human rights, Saloni Kakkar discussed various issues of human rights concern, Furkan talked about dignity and plight of women, Jahanvi Gupta delivered a talk on the issue of poverty among children and Rushda Siddiqui recited a poem on violation of rights.
Dr Rahat Hassan extended the vote of thanks.
