ALIGARH  : Rayyan, a two and a half year old male child from Moradabad, suffering from weakness in both legs for the last 6 months, was evaluated with MRI of spine at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, which revealed a huge spine tumor involving five segments with extension into chest and abutting aorta, the major blood vessel of body.

He was later operated in a single sitting by a combined team of neurosurgeon and cardiothoracic surgeon.

“The surgery took about five hours as the tumor was compressing over the spinal cord and nerves involving five vertebral segments. We have removed the entire length of the tumor, which was vascular and adherent to nerves”, said neurosurgeon Dr. Ahmed Ansari at J.N. Medical College.

Prof. Mohd Azam Haseen, Cardiothoracic surgeon said, “We opened the left side of the chest to remove the remaining part of the tumor. It was abutting the aorta, the biggest vessel of the body and the surgery itself was risky, as very dedicated dissection is required for excising the tumor”.

Prof. Raman Mohan Sharma, Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery said “operating on such large tumors of about 15-20 cm in such a small child requires a lot of skills and team management.”

Prof. Shehla Haleem and Dr. Altaf Rehman Haider, who gave anesthesia to the child said, “Anesthesia requirements for a child who had to be operated first in prone position for tumor removal from spinal cord and then towards one side, for excision from chest, requires intensive care”.

Prof. M. Fakhrul Hoda, Department of Neurosurgery, said, “More complex neurosurgical cases are being operated at JNMC. This case in particular required team effort”.

Dr. Tabish Khan said, “Intensive care in post-operative period with excellent surgical skills are needed for better outcomes in children”.

Prof Rakesh Bhargava, Dean and Principal, J.N. Medical College, congratulated the team of neurosurgeons and cardiothoracic surgeons for doing the case successfully.
